Blog Journal #2
My experience using Microsoft Word as a student throughout my educational career has been positive for the most part. I believe it is a very efficient way to complete assignments and be able to revise them after given feedback by teachers or peers. I prefer Microsoft Word to other softwares such as Google Docs, however I do think that Google Docs is beneficial to use when completing group work. This is because it easily allows everyone to input their own opinions and edit the piece as a whole. In middle school and high school, I recall mainly using pen and paper to write essays, but that changed greatly once I got to college. I have written essentially every single essay/assignment on Microsoft Word in order to either submit through Canvas or print and bring in to class.
The ISTE Standard for Educators that is most meaningful to me is number 4: Collaborator. I believe that it is important for educators to not only relay their knowledge to their students, but also for them to recognize that much can be learned from the students themselves. This standard is centered around educators collaborating both with colleagues and students in order to create the most beneficial learning environment. This includes sharing ideas and resources with one another in order to solve problems. Technology is continuously changing and upgrading, and students often keep up to date with these things.
I do agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth, however I do not agree with all of the assertions made about them. I agree that being born during a time where Internet technology already existed may come with certain advantages to adapting to using it in everyday life, but I also believe that those labeled "digital immigrants" have the ability to do just the same. I myself would be labeled a "digital native," however I don't consider myself to be very tech- savvy. I have had teachers in the past that have known more about technology and how to use it for educational purposes than I have, and I learned a lot from them. It is inevitable that as time passes, technology will change. It is very possible that the youth may be more adaptable than older generations, but also that there is mutual learning that can occur between the two.
I agree. Teachers and students can collaborate and learn from each other. However, teachers need to learn how to incorporate technologies into pedagogy for more effective learning.
