Blog Journal 9

This semester I have been taking EME2040 as an entirely online course. While I sometimes prefer having in person classes, I feel that this one can be effectively taught online. The weekly modules allow for structure in the sense that I always am aware of upcoming assignment deadlines. With the help of Canvas reminders, it is easy to stay on top of the responsibilities in this course. Also due to to the fact that this course focuses on gaining technology skills, it is fitting that it is taught online. The weekly overview videos take the place of in person announcements and help me prepare for the week ahead.

Open educational resources, or OER, are free resources that are available for anyone to use in a multitude of ways, typically found online. These resources can be downloaded, duplicated, and/ or modified to be used in settings such as classrooms and study groups. Open educational resources are especially beneficial to teachers because they can be used to build and add to lesson plans. Edutopia has an online guide to OERs, including information on how they are to be used as well as many actual resources categorized by subject and grade level. A link to this guide can be found here.

This week I completed Assignment 4: PowerPoint for Information Dissemination and learned many new skills while doing so. I completed the assignment over the course of three days so that I could ensure that I spent ample time on each of the requirements. I learned how to create my own customized slide layout, how to make a graphic using the SmartArt tool, and also how to record my voice so that it narrates the entire presentation. It took me a bit of time to navigate these different tools, but next time it will go more smoothly because I will have experience using them! An overview of my PowerPoint is inserted here.
